Facial Lines
Concerns about facial lines are among the most common reasons people come in for a consultation. Lines develop for many reasons, including natural movement of the muscles, sun exposure, skin quality and the way the face changes over time.
Risks and possible complications are set out further down this page and we ask that you read them before booking.
Who it may suit
People who would like to understand what is contributing to the lines they notice, and to discuss whether any treatment is appropriate for them. Suitability is assessed individually at consultation.
What to expect
Your appointment begins with a discussion of your concerns, medical history and what you would like to achieve. I assess your face at rest and in movement and explain the options that may be relevant, along with what each involves. If treatment goes ahead on the day, it is planned and consented to beforehand.
Preparation and downtime
Arrive with clean skin where possible and let me know about any medications, supplements or recent illness. Downtime depends on what is agreed at consultation and is explained to you in advance.
Risks and possible complications
Any treatment for facial lines is a medical treatment and carries risk, and we would rather you know that before you come in. Anything that involves a needle can cause redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising and small marks at the treated points, and some people notice a mild headache or a temporary flu like feeling afterwards. Less commonly there can be uneven or incomplete results, temporary weakness or altered movement in nearby muscles, lumps or areas of firmness, or a temporary change in skin pigment. Infection and allergic reaction are uncommon but are possible whenever the skin is broken, and spreading redness, increasing pain or discharge should be reported to us promptly. Rarely, more serious complications occur, including injury to a blood vessel which can damage the skin, and effects that extend beyond the treated area. These need prompt medical attention, and you will be told exactly what to watch for and how to reach us. Results are temporary, they vary considerably from person to person and some people respond less well than others. Lines caused by sun damage or skin quality behave differently to lines caused by muscle movement, so not every line responds to every option. Not everyone is suitable, and treatment is generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding, with certain nerve or muscle conditions, and where there is active infection or inflammation in the area. Because some of the options involve prescription medicines, Australian advertising rules mean those medicines cannot be named or described on this page, so the specific risks, expected recovery and alternatives for whatever suits you are explained to you in person, and in the written information you are given, before you consent. You are welcome to call the clinic on (02) 9331 7228 with any questions.
Please note
Treatments for facial lines may involve prescription medicines. Australian advertising rules mean prescription medicines cannot be named or described here, so these are only discussed with you in person during a consultation. An in-person consultation is required before any treatment. Results may vary from person to person. Potential risks, benefits and suitability are discussed with you before any treatment is provided.
